Salsa lesson
When this Thursday event was active, the salsa class started at 9:30 pm. The class lasted one hour and was taught “on two,” also called mambo or New York style.
Usually, the class split into beginner and intermediate groups. The room where the lesson and social dancing took place was not much to look at. The floor was less than perfect. However, the instructors were some of the best salsa dancers around.
They consistently put effort into teaching patterns that were elegant and easy to lead.
Social dancing
Social dancing started at 10:30 pm, right after the class. Like any salsa venue, the dancers had different experience levels.
However, most of the crowd was made up of experienced dancers. Many people who came here either performed, competed, or taught salsa. About 80% of the crowd seemed to be salsa dancers with years of experience.
The less experienced dancers were usually people who stayed after the salsa lesson for the social. This salsa night had one of the highest ratios of professional and advanced dancers in town.
Even so, the experienced dancers were friendly. I did not notice stuck-up people. If you were not a great dancer, they would still dance with you.
Music
The music was mostly salsa, with some bachata between salsa songs. DJ Michael Wayne did more than mix music. He was also a strong salsa dancer and instructor.
Because of that, he spent a lot of time choosing strong salsa songs for his playlist.
