Post update: This salsa lesson has been cancelled and no longer held at this location.
After taking a long summer vacation in New York City, one of my favorite salsa instructors David Olarte, who is unmatched in salsa dancing, performing, and teaching, is now back and he added public group salsa class to his schedule.
About David Olarte:
For those who are unfamiliar with David (on the picture above he is putting on some salsa music) here are a few facts about him and the Stilo Dance Company he directs. In 2013 Stilo as a group took 3rd place in the Annual World Latin Dance Cup. In 2011 it was the 5th place in the World Latin Cup in Las Vegas.
As an instructor David brakes down steps very well, very patient and teaches patterns that are elegant and look graceful on the dance floor. Besides being an awesome salsa instructor David is a super nice guy, who always makes you feel welcome at the studio he rents.
One of the best things about taking a lesson from David is that he looks very natural when he dances, and he teaches his students to dance the same way. Originally David is from the mid west and when he was learning to dance, just like anyone else he had to put a lot of time and effort into the process of learning. You could not tell that though, when you see him dance. Take away the white color of his skin and on the dance floor David looks like a Columbian or Puerto Rican, someone who has dancing in their DNA and looking natural on the dance floor is just a part of their culture.
Salsa lesson:
If it is an hour lesson, half of the class David usually teaches foot wok and the other half partner work. For the foot work there are no patterns. It is more of a watch and follow the best you can, type of thing. For the partner work the patterns start with something simple and get more complicated toward the middle.
There is a beginner and an intermediate lesson from 9-10pm. The lesson is split in 2 groups. The cost is $10 per lesson.
If you never taken a salsa lesson with David and his Stilo group stop by and check it out.
